Saturday Night Slam Masters 10/17/98

West Bronco vs Nitro

West Bronco would have gone on in the SMWA Toughman Tournament.   As a matter of fact, it was Nitro that he beat in that first round, but it was also that first round where West suffered an injury which effectively took him out of the tournament.
Even though the Toughman belt is temporarily out of his reach, Bronco has a chance to take a piece out of Nitro tonight.
Nothing too fancy about this opening match.   Nitro tried to take an early advantage, but Bronco once again out fought him.   A flurry of punches and kicks, a flying lariat and a Tombstone,   and West Bronco had his first win since coming back from his injury.

West Bronco pinned Nitro with the Tombstone in 0:04:44.
Rating: 3/4*

SMWA Toughman Tournament - Quarterfinal Match
Mauling Bear vs Blackhook

No longer a Sin, Blackhook came to this match alone.   Mauling Bear had Dark Angel of Sky Entertainment at his side as his cornerman.
Mauling Bear has been a mid-carder since the War Party split up years ago.   Blackhook has shown sparks of greatness in matches against King Rasta and Mike Haggar, but has yet to make the big breakthrough.   This could be his match to do it.

Round 1: Mauling Bear busted 'Hook open early on, but Blackhook had this round in the bag.   He floored Mauling Bear with a big left, nailed him with a sweet double leg takedown and beat him on punches.   Advantage, Blackhook.
Round 2: Blackhook again outpunched Mauling Bear.   The big man from Vancouver couldn't get any sort of offense going.
Round 3: Blackhook came out swinging but missed on a big right hook.   To counter, Mauling Bear landed a HUGE uppercut.   Blackhook crumpled to the mat and the match was over.

Terry Sky vs Nord Fullstrom

Yet another battle between the Raiders and Sky Entertainment.   Sky, the CEO of Sky Entertainment, would be facing off against the big Scandinavian from the Raiders.

Before this match could even get underway, Terry Sky grabbed the microphone and did a little jawing with Nord.

"Hey, big man.   I hope you can handle a match with a cruiserweight, Nord, cause after you got knocked out by Kodiak, I'm having some doubts!"

And with that, Nord jumped Terry and the brawl was on.
Fullstrom dominated from the get go.   He nearly snapped Sky in half with a spinebuster and almost put him away with a power bomb.   Going for the quick upset, Nord dropped all of his weight on Sky and went for the pin.   He got a two count.
Fullstrom let a winded Sky regain his footing and then leveled him with the Nordic Hammer.   As Sky lay prone on the mat, much to everybody's surprise, Nord Fullstrom scaled the turnbuckles.   The three-hundred and sixty pounder then leaped off the top, trying to crush Sky with a big flying splash.
Sky saw the move from a mile away and rolled out of the way.   As Nord hit the mat, Sky was already making his way to the turnbuckle.   He climbed up, hit a moonsault and that was it.

Terry Sky pinned Nord Fullstrom after a moonsault in 0:04:38.
Rating: *

Sky left the ring quickly, as big Nord was beginning to regain his senses.   But instead of chasing after Sky, Nord just sat up, looked around and left.   He didn't look happy with his performance.
In fact, why should he be?   Nord was dominated by Kodiak Marmoset weeks ago in a Toughman match even though he had 140 lbs on Kodiak.   Now, he had lost to Sky after just one move!
Nord slumped into the back of the arena.

SMWA Toughman Tournament - Quarterfinal Match
"Jackhammer" Andrew Marshall vs El Stingray

Two Raider teammates would face off in what seemed like a mismatch.   Marshall was bigger, stronger, a harder puncher and almost as good of a wrestler.   Stingray had his speed, but would that take him five rounds against Jackhammer?   No way was Stingray ending this match by knockout.

Round One: Marshall slugged and slugged and slugged.   Stingray dodged most of the blows but couldn't land any of his own in retaliation.   A double leg takedown late in the match, however, brought Stingray a tie in points.
Round Two: Early in the round, Marshall hit a good jab that put Stingray down on the mat.   He again beat him in punches, but Stingray again managed to do some quick takedowns later in the round to tie both men at 15.
Round Three: More of the same.   Marshall led with the punching, Stingray dominated the takedowns.   Tied at 25 points.
Round Four: Marshall seemed ready for Stingray's speedy takedowns and managed to avoid them all while peppering Stingray with shots.   Stingray didn't go down, but he was now behind by five points.
Round Five: Stingray charged Marshall with a takedown, evening the score.   But when the two got up, Marshall floored Stingray with an uppercut.   Though Stingray did get up, he wasn't the same and was unable to get anything going for the rest of the match.   Advantage, Marshall.

SLAM MASTERS: PROVING GROUND UPDATE

Two more matches have been added to Slam Masters: Proving Ground.   Grant Redstone will face off against Shadow Maxx, as the two men who have beefs with King Rasta try to settle their own scores, while in tag team action, Johnny Proton will team with Kodiak Marmoset against the team of F-X

SMWA Television Title Match
King Rasta (c) w/ Bobby the Monkey vs Angus Wallace w/ Hamish Mactavish

Well, Rasta has already defeated the other members of   Highland Hell in one-on-one encounters.   Why not try for number three?
Rasta was at least as strong as Angus, but he certainly had the edge in speed.   Rasta was able to run Hamish over many times early on.   A big flying kneedrop almost put the Highlander down for the count.   Rasta went to the well once too often though.   His next flying kneedrop hit nothing but mat.
Angus poured it on and nearly caved Rasta's face in with an inverted power bomb.   Seeing his opportunity, Angus FINALLY did the move that made his two tag team partners famous.   Angus Wallace locked on the SCOTTISH BREAKER!!!
Rasta struggled and squirmed but he couldn't quite break the hold.   It looked like he was about to go out when Angus, possibly tired from keeping Rasta in the hold so long, had to release the hold.
Outside the ring, Bobby the Monkey was taunting Hamish Mactavish, trying to goad him into...something.   Finally, Hamish got fed up and started chasing Bobby around the ring.
Inside the ring, Angus went for a big clothesline which Rasta ducked.   Hitting a Samoan Drop, Rasta was about to go up top for the Dread Lock Drop - until he saw Hamish chasing Bobby around the ring.   Rasta slid outside...and was leveled by a Hamish lariat.   That's all the ref needed to see.

King Rasta defeated Angus Wallace by disqualification in 0:05:33.
Rating: *
(King Rasta retained the SMWA Television Title.)

Angus and Hamish beat Rasta down on the outside and it didn't look like things would get much better when, from out of the stands, Shadow Maxx entered the fray.   With chain in hand, Maxx started swinging...and chased away Angus and Hamish.
However, this display was unseen by Rasta.   When Rasta saw Maxx, he jumped him right away and started pounding.   The brawl was broken up when Bobby started screeching.   Rasta attended to his friend, while Maxx sank back into the shadows.

SMWA North American Title Match
"Titan" Tim Redbury (c) vs Lantern

The captain of the Raiders would defend his North American Title against the man who has quite litterally had a few "run-ins" with him over the past few matches, Lantern.
For Lantern, this is a very big opportunity.   Not only is it a chance to win the North American Title, but it is also a chance to prove to Sky Entertainment Ltd. that he's not an idiot, much to the disagreement of Sky Director of Personnel Ron Grayson.

Titan took a very early lead, basically choking and tossing and doing whatever he wanted with Lantern.   Lantern took many breaks on the outside, but none of them helped him any.
Re-entering the ring, Lantern poked Titan in the eye and then leaped onto the top turnbuckle and tried for a flying bulldog.   Titan just shrugged him off.
The rest of the match followed the same pattern.   Lantern would frequently break the action and then try to knock Titan off balance with his speed.   But Titan had all of the moves scouted.   Lantern didn't stand much of a chance.
Finally, Lantern tried for the wrong move.   As he jumped onto the ropes, he went for a springboard axhandle.   Titan grabbed him in the air and landed the Cla w Slam.   That was it.

Titan Tim Redbury pinned Lantern with the Claw Slam in 0:07:26.
Rating: 1/4*
(Titan Tim Redbury retained the SMWA North American Title.)

Titan left the ring.   Lantern was still out but was starting to come to as Ron Grayson came down to the ring and verbally undressed him.   "I've got a match tonight, I can't deal with this!!!"   Grayson kept laying in to Lantern until the two eventually made their way into the back.

SMWA Toughman Tournament - Quarterfinal Match
The Flying Scotsman vs Kodiak Marmoset

Kodiak was again giving up a lot of size to an opponent, but after his convincing TKO victory over Nord Fullstrom, it didn't look like he'd be in too tough against the Scotsman.
Scotsman has had plenty of experience fighting in the bars of Cubernauld and the rest of Scotland and it's helped him thus far.   But would it help him against the hard hitting Cruiserweight Champ?

Round One: Kodiak came out swinging, but Scotsman was ready.   He took an early Kodiak flurry, waited for an opening, and then clocked him with a left hook.   Kodiak didn't stay down long and again came up swinging.   Scotsman again picked his shot, this time a right straight, and Kodiak went down again!   Kodiak got up one more time and was leveled with a left hook.   The ref stopped the bout

Kodiak was furious at the end of the match.   Yes, he had been knocked down three times, but he was nowhere near to being done.   Kodiak jawed with the referee, who basically ignored him and his pleas.   The ref left the ring, leaving Kodiak none too happy on the inside.
Kodiak started kicking the ropes and cursing at the ref to "get the hell back in here!"   It was a very uncharacteristic move for the usually calm and charming Kodiak.   Finally, Kodiak left the ring.

After the match, Scotsman had his elbow looked at by physicians.   Apparently, there were some problems that would keep Scotsman out of the tournament.
His spot would probably be taken by El Stingray or Akira Wan-Pai, as those two both garnered thrity points in their losses.   Stingray is the more likely choice.

SMWA World Tag Team Title Match
Fuerza Dragon (c) vs The Philadelphia X-Treme Machine w/ Extinct

Fuerza Dragon hasn't had a chance to defend their World Tag Team Titles yet.   Their first defense would come against the men they won them from under questionable circumstances, the Philadelphia X-Treme Machine.
Fuerza Dragon took the quick advantage, with Fuego and Hielo double teaming Crash Burnz with lightning precision.   Hielo leveled Burnz with a flying sommersault, at which point Fuego entered and the two Dragons dropped a series of rapid fire elbows on their much stronger opponent.   A quick Doctor Bomb almost did the PXM in.
It was at this point that Battle got a bit fed up with standing on the apron and, illegally entering the ring, kicked Hielo right in the back of the head.
The PXM took advantage with their trademark moves.   Hielo was shot like a lawn dart as the PXM hit him with a double launch slam.   Battle and Burnz took turns wearing down the smaller man and it looked like Fuerza Dragon would have another short-lived Tag Team Title run.
      Then a Ghost appeared....
Ghost showed up and ran to the ring.   He entered the ring...and hit FUERZA DRAGON!!!   The ref saw this and the match was over.

Fuerza Dragon defeated The Philadelphia X-Treme Machine when Fuego defeated Burnz by disqualification in 0:07:27.
Rating: ** 3/4
(Fuerza Dragon retained the SMWA World Tag Team Titles.)

Not only had Ghost cost the PXM a match, but he helped Fuerza Dragon hold on to the World Tag Team Titles.   Ghost's little hit and run was successful.

SMWA Luck of the Draw Match
Teknos vs "The Teddy Bear of Destruction" Rokuru

The hot Teknos took on Rokuru, who after his recent effort agains the Actor, looked like he might be back on the winning track.   It should be an interesting Cruiserweight contest.
Teknos took the advantage early, flying all over Rokuru and planting him in the mat with a double underhook superplex.   Teknos used his lucha style to take a commanding lead early on, and then switched styles on Rokuru mid-match, hitting two inverted atomic drops and a backbreaker.
Lantern kept up the speedy and the Lil' Destroyer was in trouble.   Finally, Teknos missed on a leg lariat and Rokuru took control.   He started wearing Teknos down with submission holds and then climbed up top and floored him with a flying Frankensteiner.   Rokuru then hit with a big Yakuza kick, but the ref was out of position and Rokuru only got a two count.
Rokuru was upset but pressed on.   He tossed Teknos into the ropes but Teknos rebounded with a great spinning DDT.     Teknos kept on spinning, climbing the top turnbuckle and hitting the Teknospinner for the win.

Teknos pinned Rokuru with the Teknospinner in 0:13:04.
Rating: ** 1/2

Main Event
Special Six Man Tag Team Match
Simply The Best (Simmons, Kent & Clark)
vs
Sky Entertainment Ltd. (Grayson, Hamish & Dark Angel)

A high paced, spirited match between two of the SMWA's newest stables.   This would be Simply the Best's first six man effort, while Sky Entertainment would be throwing Ron Grayson, Hamish Mactavish and Dark Angel together.   Should be an interesting match.

Simply the Best used their speed early to isolate big Hamish.   Dropkick combos, mat wrestling - Hamish couldn't keep track of who he was facing in the opening minutes.   Eventually, he got the tag out to Dark Angel, who proceeded to maul Jerry Kent, nearly putting him away early with the Ride to Hell choke slam.
Simply the Best came back and hit the Best-Driver on Angel, who was saved by Grayson, who was summarily tagged in.   Grayson was able to fly around StB and eventually set up some great double teaming with the power of Angel and Hamish.   Clark took the brunt of the assault and was eventaully spiked by a Hamish tombstone followed by a flying elbowdrop from Grayson.
Grayson went for a big lariat, but Clark ducked and nailed a release German suplex.   The tag was made to Cody, who beat on all members of Sky Entertainment.   Eventually, he hit Hamish with the 1-2 Uppercut combo and tagged in Clark for the finish.
Then, out of NOWHERE, CLEPTO THE CLOWN charged the ring!!!   He tackled Clark, punched him a few times and then ran away!   The ref called for the bell.

Simply the Best (Cody Simmons, Jerry Kent, and Rick Clark) defeated Sky Entertainment Ltd. (Dark Angel, Hamish MacTavish, and Ron Grayson)
when Clark defeated Hamish by disqualification in 7:36.

Rating: **** 1/4

For some odd reason, Clepto the Clown had just attacked Rick Clark.   But before he left the ring, he made sure to hand something to Ron Grayson.
      It looked like...a business card???
