Saturday Night Slam Masters 09/19/98

We started off with Jack Slade vs Nitro, where an announcement was made by the commentators that it would indeed be Jack Slade as Mike Haggar's tag team partner for this Monday's Four Way Crash. Slade then overcame a very brief lull at the start of his match vs Nitro to score with a Spiked DDT for the win.

Jack Slade pinned Nitro with the Spiked DDT in 0:03:25.
Rating: 1/2*

Then out came Jerry Kent, old foe of Slade and Haggar, half of Simply the Best and an opponent this Monday Night.

"Jack, Jack, Jack. You were doing so well there for a while. Off doing your own thing, wrestling your own fights against a guy who thought you were the chosen successor to Mike Haggar and battling it out with a guy who's stalking his daughter...seemed like you were finally getting out of the old man's shadow. Well, Jack I guess you've just thrown all that 'personal achievement' to hell, because I've heard you're going to stand by Haggar's side this Monday...you are a DISGRACE! You can't get into any main event match where the name Haggar isn't mentioned, can you Jack? Riding the coattails, that's all. Well, kid,
if you're actually committed to going on Monday, I'll see you then. But for your sake, I wouldn't."

Jack shot back as Kent left "Hey Kent...still bitter that I whooped your ass a few months ago or what? Pal, I don't need Mike Haggar to be in a main event and you know it. But we're teaming this Monday, whether you think I should or not, and when we do, it's going to be nothing but hell for you and 'Tricky' Ricky."
"I've heard just about enough of this shadow crap."

And with that, Jack Slade left the ring.

Ron Grayson pinned Ultimate Spider after a slingshot back suplex in 0:05:13.
Rating: *** 1/4

The Cruiserweight contenders tournament, which will be wrapping up on Monday, continued tonight as Ron Grayson and Ultimate Spider faced off. It was fairly even early on until Sky Entertainment go involved. As Terry Sky distracted the ref, Lantern entered the ring and smacked Lantern with a chair. Then, placing the chair on the ground, Grayson excecuted a DRAGON SUPLEX on the CHAIR!!! A slingshot back suplex was then all it took for the Spider to go down.

Falls-Count-Anywhere Match:
Cody Simmons pinned Kenji Hashimuto with the 1-2-Uppercut Combo in 0:02:32.
Rating: * 1/2

Next up, Cody Simmons took on Kenji Hashimuto in a FCA tune-up for the Detroit Street fight next Sunday. Kenji tried to offset Cody's boxing skills with his martial arts, but it wasn't enough.

Then Cody grabbed the mic, expected to once again lambaste some aspect of Jack Slade and Jessica Haggar's relationship...but that isn't exactly where it went. "All right, I've had enough of this. Mike...yeah, I'm talking to you Mike Haggar, I know you're in the building....what's the deal? We used to be pretty tight, remember? Hell, how else do you think me and Jessica met. But since I came here to the SMWA, you've done nothing but avoid and ignore me. You've been nice enough, but it's pretty obvious that you don't want anything to do with me now, right? You and me both know why, and we don't have to go in to it on national TV, but all I got to say Mike is that I'm sorry, alright? There, I've said my piece....now what do you have to say?"

Mike Haggar appeared up the ramp and made his way to the ring. He grabbed the mic and started talking. "Look, Cody. You know damn well why I have trouble talking to you, and we're not going to discus it here. Yeah, I've been avoiding you, but not just for what you're getting at...Jess is with Jack right now, okay. That's where that ends. You gave up any claim to being her boyfriend years ago."

"Mike, come on, can't a guy make a mistake?"

"Not like the mistake you left on my head, Cody."

There was a sullen, serious tone in Mike Haggar's voice. Whatever it was that he and Cody were talking about, it cut deep. "But Mike, you can't approve of Jack, can you? I mean, look at him...he's a skid, a thief. Heck, he's even admitted as much. You want you daughter dating a common street criminal? That's how much you care about her?"

As the conversation went on, Jack Slade came to the ring. "At least Jack never left her when it got a little too hot to stick around."

"I did what I did for the greater good of everybody."

"You ran away, Cody and you know it!"

Cody turned and looked at Slade "Well, here's the Golden Boy right now!"

Mike looked at Slade. "Jack, I know you're upset, but right now this is between me and Cody."

"The hell it is, Mike. This jackass Simmons comes back and everything goes crazy. Jess told me some of it, the stuff about New York...but she's holding back on something, something you all know and I don't. This guy's gonna go and try to mess up what me and Jess got, I want some damn answers. Stop holding back."

Cody saw a perfect cheap shot opportunity. "Guess you're just not important enough to know some things, eh, Jack...every couple has their secrets!"

Slade lost it and lunged at Cody. But HAGGAR held Slade back."Jack, not now, okay!"

"Damn it, Mike, what is this? I'm good enough to team with you, but you don't tell me stuff? I'm good enough to date your daughter, but you won't let me defend her? I'm sick and tired of these old skeletons and secrets, Mike...I'm outta here."

And with that, Slade left the ring. Haggar turned and glowered at a smirking Cody. "You just like to piss everybody off, don't you?"

And with that, Haggar left the ring and followed Slade backstage. Whatever these three were talking about, it went deep.

Highland Hell defeated Los Viajeros Dos Mil when Hamish pinned BC-2000 with the Scottish Slam in 0:10:08.
Rating: *** 3/4

Highland Hell again took it to Los Viajeros. The luchadors did their best, but it now seems like the Highlanders officially have their numbers. A big Scottish Slam was all it took for Hamish and Angus to take the win. But they weren't going anywhere, as the next match was The Flying Scotsman in his first defense of the TV Title...against King Rasta!!!

The bout started in typical Rasta or TFS fashion...with a brawl. Scotsman got the edge there when he hit Rasta with a BIG low blow and then propped Rasta up top for a top-rope DDT. But Rasta was ready for that one and grabbed the legs of the Scotsman, sending him crashing down to the mat with a flying SPINEBUSTER!!!

Rasta took control, but then overshot a baseball slide to the outside, putting in a bit too much speed and power, sending his head bouncing off the floor on the outside of the ring. Scots took control for a moment, sending Rasta from post to post and then laying out a table and putting Rasta on the table. Scotsman then climbed the top rope. Rasta got off the table, got on the apron, and caught Scotsman with a belly-to-belly that sent him THROUGH the table on the outside!!! But before Rasta could capitalize, Hamish Mactavish and Dark Angel, who had joined his stablemates, wailed on Rasta with a double lariat. The ref warned the two, but the damage was done.

Scotsman took the match back inside and immediately locked on the Scottish Breaker!!! Rasta squirmed in pain, trying to escape the hold. It looked like he was going to go out, but the big man stuck with it.
Eventually, after 54 seconds, the Scotsman HAD to let go. Rasta, pissed, got up and immediately nailed the Scotsman with a lariat. It was all Rasta from there on in. He nailed the Scotsman with a Samoan
Drop and then a flying kneedrop. Highland Hell and the Angel jumped up onto the apron, but Rasta knocked them all back down. Scaling the ropes, Rasta hit the Dread Lock Drop and went for the pin.

Lovechild made Teknos submit to the Love Hug in 0:10:38.
Rating: *** 3/4

Teknos tried to get airborne, but Lovechild kept him right down on the mat at all times. It was even until Lovechild hit a powerslam, and then that's when it ended. The Pied Piper of Love hit Teknos with every submission hold he could and eventually hit the Love Hug for the win.

Simply the Best defeated North & South (Robin North and Jarrod South) when Kent pinned South with the Reb-driver in 0:06:26.
Rating: -3/4*

North and South are going nowhere, and Simply the Best just looked bored in that ring. But they didn't care. They took the win and then stuck around because next was Mike Haggar vs Nord Fullstrom.

Before the match, we went backstage, outside of Haggar's dressing room. We could hear arguing within, and then Jack Slade stormed out of the dressing room. Mike Haggar and Jessica Haggar followed, but had to get to the ring. Jessica did not accompaigny Mike, but went to talk to Jack.

As Clark and Kent sat down to do some unflattering colour commentary, Mike Haggar came to the ring. Nord Fullstrom, already in the ring, started this one early....he knew chances to defeat Mike Haggar never came around that often, so he had to take what he could get. Nord started in with punches, kicks and, to everybody's surprise, A DROPKICK!!! But even a shocking Gorilla Press couldn't keep Nord ahead. When he wrapped his hands around Haggar's neck for a choke slam, Haggar struck. An elbow to the head, a dropkick, two vertical suplexes...Haggar was back in control. A bridge suplex nearly did Nord in, as did a jack-knife powerbomb followed by a flying legdrop. But it was all over when Haggar hit the Screwdriver.

Mike left the ring and stood face to face with Simply the Best. Kent got slapped in the face so hard that his family probably felt it at home. Haggar then fought off both members of Simply the Best...with nobody coming out to help.

Oh man, something big happened backstage between Slade and Haggar.

Mike Haggar pinned Nord Fullstrom with the Screwdriver in 0:07:40.

King Rasta pinned Kenji Hashimuto with the Dread Lock Drop in 0:06:22.
Rating: ***
(King Rasta retained the SMWA Television Title.)

Next up, the Luck of the Draw match...and there was no rest for the weary as a tired King Rasta came out as one of the wrestlers. Rasta had to defend his TV belt a bit less than an hour after winning it. His opponent was Kenji Hashimuto, who had lost earlier tonight, but his match was much shorter than Rasta's...this could be the shortest TV Title Reign EVER!!! Kenji was all over Rasta, hitting him with move after move and THREE backdrop drivers. As his Sky Entertainment Ltd. comorades looked on, including the Scotsman, Kenji DOMINATED Rasta. In fact, the end came very suddenly. Kenji went for a lariat outside, but Rasta ducked and hit a German suplex where Kenji's head actually grazed off of the guardrail. Rasta took him in the ring, hit an inverted power bomb and the Dread Lock Drop for the win. Then, Rasta got the hell out.

Main Event
World Heavyweight Title Match
Zangief (c) vs "Titan" Tim Redbury

Zangief was in an interesting spot. For the first time in his career, he was neither taller nor stronger than the man he was facing. Zangief would have to outspeed Titan and use some of his Sambo training to get the big man to the mat. Easier said than done.Zangief tried to wrestle around Titan, to move the big man. Dropkicks didn't do it, and Titan even took a Rasta lariat. Zangief went for a Soviet Suplex, but was blocked and hit by a stomachbreaker. Then, from out of nowhere, TITAN HIT THE CLAW SLAM!!! Zangief lay prone on the mat and Titan made the cover.

3...KICKOUT!!!

Zangief BARELY got out of the pinfall. He kicked out of the Claw Slam!!! WOW!!! Titan wasn't finished, though. He tossed Zangief around like he was a cruiserweight. A Russian legsweep, a Gorilla press and a big splash, and Zangief was in big trouble. Titan lifted Zangief up for another press slam, but Zangief managed to squirm behind Titan and lock on a SLEEPER. The big man had a 300 lb Russian on his back and was having trouble staying awake. Slowly, Titan began to fade...until he smashed Zangief into the turnbuckle. Undaunted, Zangief locked it on again...but this time, Titan just snapped Zangief over.
Titan hit Zangief with a big lariat, but was caught with a toehold by Zangief on the mat. The Siberian Bear Crusher went to work, tearing Titan apart. A flying lariat, a powerslam, a big flying elbow...each got a two count. A powerbomb was another two count. Zangief then went for it all with the Siberian Bear Crusher, but he couldn't hit it. He got Titan up, but Titan just fell right on Zangief's face!!! Titan nearly got three on that one. Titan hit another Claw Slam...but Zangief was too close to the ropes. He then picked the big Russian up for a bodyslam. Zangief floated over behind Titan, locked his arms and hit a beautiful tiger suplex.

Zangief had beaten Titan, but wasn't going to be able to enjoy it. The All-Americans rolled into the ring and attacked Zangief. He fought bravely, but stood no chance agianst both men...until TITAN helped Zangief out!!! Heaving both men outside, Titan saved Zangief's ass. The show ended with these two giants shaking hands.

But what about Jack Slade and Mike Haggar? What about Monday...we'll find out.
