How can anybody proclaim one man the best?

Whose to say one man is the greatest wrestler of all time?  Who can declare one man the best wrestler in a given year?  Who can proclaim that one man is destined for greatness?  Can anybody name someone else the best?

Tonight, three men step into the ring with the ultimate title on the line...the title only the best in the world can wear.  Do we bet on the iconic American hero?  Do we wager on a weapon escaped from the iron curtain?  Or do we bet on the long shot, the forgotten warrior?  The odds of winning are 1 in 3...but the odds of losing are 2 to 1.

And as the world prepares for the high stakes battle, 16 men put their faith in the luck of the draw to be the ones who play for the big money. For the winners, it's a chance at prizes others have only dreamt of.  And there is no shared pot for the losers.

 It's a night when fates can be changed with a single draw.  A night when destiny is pushed to the back.  A night when chance decides who wins.  And a night where your greatest ally could be
Lady Luck.

A night where the Aces are wild...and a King will reign.

From Reno, Nevada.

     The night opened up as most Slam Master events do...with a massive, cheering crowd, this time in the Biggest Little City in the World...an appropriate place, as tonight, any number of favorites or underdogs have a chace to make history tonight in the first ever Wild Card tournament.

    The dressing room was, as usual, separated into two.  SMWA Commish Jack McCullough came out, welcomed the fans and then brought out the hat with the names of the 16 SMWA Superstars who were about to get randomly paired up for the Wild Card tournament.  For the winners, a shot at every title in the SMWA...for the losers, an early chance to enjoy Reno.

    McCullough went into the hat and drew the first name of the night...

    "Titan Tim Redbury"

    The crowd booed the big Brit who was encouraged by his "boss" Terry Sky to get into the ring and bring some pride to Sky Entertainment Ltd.  Titan walked to the ring and McCullough drew the next name.

    "His partner....Andrew Marshall!"

    So far, nothing too huge.  Marshall and Titan have avoided each other in the SMWA, never crossing paths.  It would certainly be interesting to see how they co-exist.  McCullough went back to the hat.

    "Their first opponent...King Rasta!!!"

    The monkeyless Rasta stormed out of the dressing room and into the ring and started taunting the other two.  Rasta and Titan had their wars for the TV Title last year, but Marshall and Rasta have never really crossed.

McCullough went back to the hat...

    "And Rasta's tag team partner...lucky him...IT'S GRANT REDSTONE!!!"

    The crowd errupted as the ex-Aussie rules player stormed to the ring. Redstone has allied with Rasta in his war with the Sins, and the fact that these two are a devastating pair and good friends made them early odds on favourites.

Wild Card Tournament Quarterfinal Match
King Rasta & Grant Redstone vs Andrew Marshall & Titan Tim Redbury

    Andrew Marshall and King Rasta started the match and redefined the term high impact.  No mat wrestling, no pacing...just power spots.  Rasta hit with Samoan drops and a few suplexes, while Marshall was able to unleash a lot of his arsenal, including a beautiful flying powerslam off the
turnbuckles.  These two engaged move after powerful move for the first 6 minutes, each man maybe forgetting they had a tag team partner...but an exhausted Rasta eventually remembered...and that's when Jackhammer hit stone...Redstone.
    How Marshall survived was anybody's guess.  He had not yet tagged to Titan, and was exhausted from fighting Rasta.  Redstone wouldn't let up and tossed Marshall all over the ring...it was a testament to the toughness of Marshall that he wasn't pinned and then sustained a double team by both Redstone and Rasta.  But a reverse clothesline opened an opportunity, and an
exhausted Marshall tagged Titan.
    Redbury was rested and began to clear house, making even Redstone look less impressive.  Hitting his foes with every move he could muster, Titan eventually subdued Redstone with a big chokehold.  As strong as Grant was, he couldn't break the hold of Titan...but neither WOULD Titan.

    .....1,2,3,4,5....still choking.
    Eventually, the ref stopped the match.

[Wild Card Quarterfinals]:
Grant Redstone and King Rasta beat Titan Tim Redbury and Andrew Marshall when Redstone defeated Titan by disqualification in 0:16:49.
Rating: **1/2

    Upset at Titan's bad judgement, Marshall confronted his giant partner  and began jawing at him.  Marshall then shoved the big man down and the fight was on.  Marshall and Titan brawled into the back.  Apparently, the tournament has produced its first set of new enemies.

    Jack McCullough came back out to draw names.

    "So, who's first in the next match...from the Philadelphia X-Treme Machine, Slash Battle."

    Slash recieved words of encouragement from Extinct as his partner Crash and went to the ring.

    "His partner...fellow Doomsday Hunter RON GRAYSON!!!"

    Grayson and the DH celebrated at this news in the back.  Though Crash Burnz would have been a more natural partner, Grayson, another DHer, would certainly do.

    "And their opponents....first...former World and NA Champ, The Great Oni!!!"

    Last year, as a result of his alliances with the Scorpion and Jack Slade, Oni had put himself in direct opposition of the Doomsday Hunters....does time heal old wounds?

    "And his tag team partner...Oh boy...Extinct, have fun with this one. THE OTHER HALF OF THE PHILLY X-TREME MACHINE, CRASH BURNZ!!!"

    A huge roar came from the crowd as Crash was forced out to the ring and would be forced to fight his STABLEMATES....one of whom is his tag partner.

    Freinds vs Friends for the first time tonight.

Wildcard Tournament Quarterfinal Match
Slash Battle and Ron Grayson vs The Great Oni and Crash Burnz.

    Oni started the match against Slash, and it became obvious that the DH WAS going to team up on Oni...maybe Crash figured that it's better to have two DHers going on then him.  But Oni was game and took the fight to Slash until Oni went outside....and then the lights went out.
    For about 30 seconds, nothing could be seen in the arena...and when the lights came back up, the Great Oni had disappeared...the only thing left behind was a trail of dark dust....and the ref counting out the missing wrestler.
    Looks like Teioh is at work.

    "Well, time for another draw...first up in this match will be...SKARZZ!!!"

    King Rasta was being restrained in the other dressing room, and it was a good thing too because the look in his eyes told that he would try and destroy Skarzz...well if Skarzz and his partner win, they will face Rasta and Redstone next round...that's big enough, I think.  Skarzz and Masters
came to the ring, Bobby the Monkey in a cage.

    "His tag team partner....ALEXANDER "THE GRATER!!!"

    WOW!!! What a team!!!  And, let's not forget that, when Grater came back to the SMWA in April, he wore a Skarzz mask and HELPED Saul Masters beat Extinct.  This could be an interesting, if not unbeatable pair.

    "Their first opponent....one half of the Dream Team, "Irish" Peter McKee!"

    Mckee came to the ring ready to go.  He has no problem with either opponent.

    "And his tag team partner...oh, somebody's going to be unhappy...TERRY SKY!!!"

    It wasn't even a month ago that McKee nearly broke Terry Sky's neck before Crash Carnival, forcing him out of the big event.  How can these two possibly co-exist.

Skarzz w/ Saul Masters and Alexander "The Grater" vs Peter McKee and Terry Sky

    The shocking part was how WELL Sky and McKee worked together.  These two hated each other, but are such proficient wrestlers that they each were able to work off of each other's strengths and weaknesses to put on a great match.  With a little distraction provided by Sky, McKee even hit his Irish Bomb on GRATER...and got a near fall right there.
    On the flip side, Skarzz and Grater didn't have a whole lot of cohessivenes...at first.  But then, a brainstorm of some sort hit.  Grater regained the advantage and tagged to Skarzz as he held McKee's neck.  The same idea came at the same time and, possibly by coincidence, we saw a
DOUBLE CHOKE SLAM!!!  The tags became quicker between the two monsters and the tide turned.
    A double power bomb was hit.  Skarzz slammed Sky in position for a Grater moonsault.  McKee nearly went down with a double back suplex...and the more Sky and McKee got beat up, the less of a team they became.
    In a state of disarray, McKee and Sky fell as Skarzz hit the Skarring for the win...and then Sky took advantage, he and Titan beating McKee down until he was saved by his partner Rod Emerson.
    Sky didn't take kindly to McKee injuring him...the least he could of done was win. But it was one hell of a match.

    "Well, only four left.  Emerson, West Bronco, El Stingray and Doomsday...first man into the ring...DOOMSDAY!!!"

    The Green Gargantuan mad his way down to the ring with Extinct in tow to a chorus of boos.  Whoever was his partner would have it good.

    "His partner...again a Doomsday Hunter, WEST BRONCO!!!"

    That left El Stingray, tag partner of Terry Sky and Rod Emerson, partner of McKee as teammates....good luck.

Wild Card Tournament Quarterfinal Match
Doomsday and West Bronco w/Extinct vs El Stingray and Rod Emerson

    Emerson and Stingray fought well...individually in the ring and with each other, but never as a team.  And against Doomsday and Bronco, that was a surefire way to lose.
     West and Doomsday, though very different in style, had Extinct calling traffic...and Stingray and Emerson crashed big time.

    Emerson and Stingray then started to fight with each other, and both were joined by tag team partners McKee, Titan and Sky.   With 3 on 2, Sky Entertainment dominated and cleared the ring.  But they haven't heard the last of the Dream to be sure.

Cruiserweight Title
Johnny Proton (c) vs Teknos

    Teknos has been burning up the cruiserweight ranks over the past few months, while Proton just regained the title at Crash Carnival in a classic with Ultimate Spider.  This was sure to be a great match.
    It started off excitingly enough.  Teknos jumped Proton with a Frankensteiner and then hit him with two spinning kicks.  Proton ducked the third and hit a DDT.  With Teknos on the ground, Proton locked on a double chickenwing...and Teknos gave.

    Proton wins in 1 minute...Ouch.  That's going to cost Teknos.

    Now, on to round two of the tournament.

    The first match up would be King Rasta  & Grant Redstone vs Skarzz & Grater.
Skarzz took Rasta's monkey at Crash Carnival and has attacked Redstone in matches against the Sins.  Rasta, Redstone and Shadow Maxx have formed a triumvirate to take out the Sins, and now it was two of the three against the Sins centerpiece.
    Skarzz had only two advantages in this match...one, he had Rasta's monkey at ringside in a cage, and that was DEFINTE leverage.  Two, he had Grater in his corner...and that's damn good too, especially since he was likely to be upset that Rasta and Grant wouldn't be focusing on HIM!
    This one has the fixings of a great match.

Wild Card Tournament Semifinal Match
Alexander "The Grater" & Skarzz w/Saul Masters vs King Rasta & Grant Redstone.

    OH, DID RASTA MAKE A MISTAKE AT THE START OF THE MATCH!!!  With Grater
across the ring from him, Rasta told Grater to take a hike and let Skarzz in.  That went over about as well as expected as Grater took it right to Rasta.
    This was a VERY even match.  Skarzz took most of the match time for his squad, by choice of Saul Masters, taking the best of both Rasta and Redstone and coming back for more.  Grater looked...great.  He gave Redstone some very hard times in this match, but Redstone was not detered, as he fought right back, even managing to hit Grater with the Redstone Suplex...but
Grater had just tagged out.
    One couldn't blame Rasta for being distracted this match.  His monkey was at ringside, screaming for his best friend, locked in a cage being held by Saul Masters.  Masters was flanked by Glutt and Blackhook and kept daring Rasta to take "just one step", shaking the cage each time.  Rasta was
powerless, as he knew Masters wouldn't hesitate to hurt Bobby for a second  if Rasta advanced.  So he took it out on his foes.
    Rasta was a house afire.  He hit Grater with everything he could to get him to tag...and each time Skarzz was in that ring, Rasta went ballistic, begging Redstone for a tag.  It ended up with Skarzz and Rasta duking it out in the ring in a vicious battle.  Rasta fought like an animal but still could not faze the giant.  But he kept at it, flooring Skarzz with the Dread Lock Drop...but before he could go for a pin, Masters jumped onto the apron with the cage, threatening to toss it into the crowd!!!
    Rasta didn't make a cover and dove for Saul...giving Skarzz enough time
to hit the Skarring and get the win for his team.  Saul and the Sins bid a
hasty retreat, with Grater leaving when he was damn good and ready.
    A great match, but Rasta let his heart get in the way.

Wild Card Tournament Semifinal Match - Extinct at Ringside
Doomsday & West Bronco vs Slash Battle & Ron Grayson

    Doomsday Hunter teamed with a Doomsday Hunter against a Doomsday Hunter teamed with another Doomsday Hunter.  I wonder which faction would win.
    Well, Extinct came out with his group as a stable for this match and grabbed the mic.
    "All right, Hunters.  I don't care which team of you win this match, cause either way the Doomsday Hunters get a piece of Alexander "The Grater" in the finals.  Now, you all know what my thoughts are on this tournament as it relates to all of us, so may the best team win!"
    What was Extinct talking about "thoughts on the tournament"?

    Well, this match was fairly good for four teammates fighting it out. Each DH member was comitted to proving who was the best (with the exception of Doomsday, who is usually only concerned about destroying his opponent). Grayson dazzled the fans and the DH with his vast arsenal of high flying moves.  Bronco showed his toughness, taking the Texas Brawl to both of his opponents.  Slash Battle didn't even think twice about hitting his stablemates with chairs and table spots.  And all the time, Extinct looked on with interest from ringside.
    The end of this match came very suddenly.  Moving at a decent clip, Grayson was taking it to Doomsday.  He irish whipped the big man into the corner, but Doomsday reversed it, hit an avalanche and got the pin.  Grayson got up slowly.

    Extinct climbed into the ring and helped Grayson up...then threw him into Doomsday.  Doomsday hit the Armageddon...then hit it again.  Slash Battle then picked an unconscious Grayson up and had Crash Burnz hit him with the Philly Back Breaker.  West Bronco sat in the corner, stunned at what his teammates were doing.
    Extinct grabbed the mic.

    "Grayson, your heart was never in this group and you know it.  You saved Jessica Haggar a month ago by letting Slade go.  You kept me from being at ringside at Crash Carnival.  You've let me down since again and again....I've had it with you.  There are no individuals in the Hunters...we are a team that follows MY orders."
    "And Bronco...good luck in the next match.  You'll want it!  And Doomsday...well, you don't need it.  Never had."

    Ron Grayson is gone from the Doomsday Hunters...and for reasons known
only to Extinct, West Bronco could be next.

    The crowd, still shocked by what had just happened, was buzzing about
the next match .  One of the biggest rematches the SMWA has seen in a long
time.

Television Title Grudge Match
"Cruncher" Jack Slade (c) vs "The Rebel" Jerry Kent

    Jerry Kent came out to the ring first, Slade second.  Based on what happened at Crash Carnival, one might expect Slade to approach this match carefully...
    Well, running to the ring and beating the hell out of your opponent isn't very careful, but it certainly was an effective way to start off what would  end up being an all out assault.
    Two minutes into the match, Charlie Angel showed his face, coming down to ringside and watching his "Chosen One"  with delight.
    Slade showed off a few new tricks to Kent early on...a spinebuster bomb, a belly-to-back superplex, and a half nelson bulldog...or the Concussion Bomb, as Jack calls it.  But Kent was more than up for the task.  Slade went for an early kill up top but missed a flying cross body press.  Kent took advantage.
    The rest of the encounter was very evenly fought.  Kent reverse another spinebuster bomb attempt into a DDT.  Slade used a backslide to counter a Kent abdominal stretch.  Neither man was able to hit any high spot as both had scouted the other VERY well.  All were countered or blocked.  The best counter series of the match came when Slade went for a Spiked DDT and Kent reversed with a backdrop.  Slade held on for a sunset flip, which Kent countered into a double leg cradle.
    The two got up.  Kent missed a lariat, ducked a Slade superkick and tried to hit a Reb-Driver.  Jack tripped him up and applied the Cruncher Crab...a little too close to the ropes.  A clothesline then knocked both men outside.
    It was there that Charlie Angel made his move.  Slade got into the ring by himself and, as the ref's back was turned,  Angel hit Kent with a DDT.
    Slade saw what the ref didn't and yell at Charlie "What the HELL are you doing?"  Angel merely bowed to Slade and the ref counted...but Slade told the ref to stop.  He then told the ref what Angel did, and asked for a minute for Kent to recover so the match could go on.
    As Kent struggled to his feet, the ref decided not to be so nice.  He disqualified Slade and gave the match to Kent.
    Angel was irrate, but before he could confront the ref, Kent hit him with a chair.  He then grabbed the mic and told the ref "This match isn't ending until I put Slade's shoulders on the mat.  I don't want a DQ win.  Restart the match."
    This, plus the reaction of the crowd, had the ref doing just that.
    Unfortunately, Kent was still groggy from the DDT.  He struggled for the next two minutes of the match before Slade hit a spinebuster bomb and got the win.

    Slade left the ring, looking unimpressed.  Angel woke up and left a minute later.  Kent was helped to his feet and left the ring on his own power...but not before grabbing the mic.

    "Slade, you didn't win anything tonight.  I beat you at Crash Carnival, and you needed help to beat me tonight...I think I've proved who's the better man."

    With that, Kent staggered back to the dressing room.

    The finals of the Wild Card tournament would see Alexander "The Grater" face off against his opponent from Crash Carnival, West Bronco, who had been put in front of Grater at every turn to keep Grater away from Doomsday.
    Speaking of which,  it would also see Grater vs Doomsday.  These two have hated each other since a backstage attack by Doomsday in January put Grater on the shelf for three months.  Doomsday stole Grater's famous shoulder pads and destroyed them, but could not destroy Grater.
    Grater also cost Extinct, the DH manager a chance to rid the SMWA of the Sins at Slam Masters: Purgatory by attacking Extinct.
    Skarzz and Doomsday had a few close calls in the months leading up to Purgatory, being on different sides and all, but never had an actual match. This would be the first time these two monsters would officially step into the one on one.
    And it's been a while, but West Bronco feuded with Masters a while back when then-charge Nitro lit Bronco's then-mentor Jack Flap on FIRE!!!  Skarzz and West had a vicious barbed-wire casket match, but that ended on the interference of Masters and the Sins.  Even though Bronco now is no longer associated with Jack Flap, he's sure to have not forgotten the beatings Skarzz had laid on him.
    And lets not forget that it sounded like Extinct was ready to boot Bronco is he loses.
    This would be a tense final.  And the Wild Card would have it's first champions.

Wild Card Tournament Final
Alexander "The Grater" & Skarzz w/Saul Masters vs Doomsday & West Bronco w/ Extinct

    Once again, Extinct put Bronco in front of Grater first, and West couldn't have been too pleased about that, especially with his membership on the line.  He got beat up for a few minutes, then promptly tagged to Doomsday.
    Grater was on the apron, but the pop for Doomsday standing across the ring from Skarzz was as big as anything Doomsday and Grater could get.  SMWA fans have wanted to see these two monsters in the ring against one another for a long time.
    Skarzz hit Doomsday with a clothesline, which did nothing.  Neither did Doomsday's.  Then, Skarzz grabbed Doomsday by the throat and chokeslammed him.  Doomsday returned the favour.  Neither man appeared to be hurt.
    It turned into raw fists from both men, with Doomsday getting the edge before Grater came into the ring and leveled him from behind with an enzuilariato.  Skarzz tagged out, and we finally were going to Grater get at Doomsday again.
    Grater just started nailing Doomsday with everything he could muster. Though we couldn't tell if Doomsday was fazed, he was having trouble fighting back against the blitzkreig of Grater.  Clotheslines, forearms and two choke slams.  Grater wouldn't let up and even lifted the 400 lb Doomsday into a power bomb.  But a kick to the groin ended that exchange.
    Doomsday dominated for the next few minutes, nearly taking the match with a spinning power bomb and then tagged out to Bronco.  West had an easy time with the downed Grater...until Grater woke back up.
    It was at this point that we knew what would happen to Bronco.  West was hit with two Tenderizer elbow shots and Grater tagged out.  He and Skarzz grabbed West on both sides and hit him with a DOUBLE waistlock suplex that was so powerful, West was in the air about two or three feet over Skarzz' head before he started to decend...and that ten foot drop took it's toll. As did the next one, a double gorilla press.
    Extinct, not wanting to see his team lose the match, made it his duty over the next five minutes to interfere and save Bronco's ass.  He did everything possible to keep Bronco in the match.  He even tried to throw a pair of knucks to Bronco...who was too groggy to even attempt a catch.  Grater wasn't, though. He took then, whacked Bronco across the skull and hit the Doomsday Tornado.
The slaughter was over.

Wild Card Tournament Finals

    Doomsday dragged the unconscious Bronco from the ring and, at Extinct's bidding, threw him into a group of fans at ringside, who poured beer over his head to wake him up and get him off of their laps.
    Skarzz and Grater eyed each other and Masters told Grater..."Let's go backstage and talk"  The first Wild Card champs went back to the dressing room...and will go on to Massacre on Monday to face off against the Super Powers.  What a match that should be.

     Now, the talk was over.  Who would be the best in the world?  That was the question on the mind of all of the fans out there (especially the heavy marks) as we prepared for a triangle match for the most coveted title in the world...The SMWA World Title.

Main Event
Triangle Match for the SMWA World Heavyweight Title
Mike Haggar (c) vs Zangief (North American Champ) vs "Tricky" Rick Clark

    Clark came out first and recieved the loudest boos of anybody that night.  The crowd was obviously not pleased that Haggar vs Zangief had to feature this talented yet not well liked wrestler.
    Zangief entered to a huge pop.  He walked into the ring and immediately approached Clark, who had cost him the belt weeks earlier.  The ref got in the way and told Zangief to wait his turn.
    It was Mike Haggar's turn now.  Recieving a pop equal to Zangief's, the SMWA living legend came to the ring with a look of all business.  Entering into the ring, he gave a quick look to Clark then locked eyes with Zangief.
    It had been decided backstage by another draw that it would be Clark and Zangief to start the match...but not many fans wanted that.
    Clark looked at the crowd, which was chanting "Haggar!!! Haggar!!!" and immediately tagged out to a HUGE pop.  The crowd would see Haggar vs Zangief...and they were hoping that Clark would never get tagged in.
    These two titans went right at each other.  A test of strength was suggested, but both men decided for a few armlocks instead.  Haggar floored Zangief first with a lariat, but Zangief was quick to get up and nail an enzuigiri.  Then it got especially vicious.  For the next five minutes, the two men exchanged power move for move...piledrivers, power bombs, suplexes...there was no slowdown.  Zangief hit Haggar with three consecutive spinning lariats but was backdropped on an attempted Bear Crusher.  Haggar hit a flying lariat for a two count, but his attempt at the Screwdriver was
countered with an STF after a leg trip.  It was nine minutes into the match before Clark was tagged in.
    Clark took the fight to Zangief for about a minute and a half and then tagged out.  Zangief dodges a charge by Haggar and hit a tombstone...two count.  Zangief tagged to Clark who applied an octopus hold which Haggar muscled out of.  A flying dropkick by Clark...two count.  Haggar reversed the subsequent attempt at a Sky-Driver with a small package.  Two count.
    Clark then tagged out to Zangief, and that battle started again.
    With Haggar down, Zangief began to slap the legend around.  Bad move. Haggar woke up and these two went right at it again.  The action spilled onto the apron where punches by both  men sent them both flying into a ringside table.  The brawl continued on the floor for a few more minutes, Zangief bringing a chair into play, Haggar suplexing Zangief groin first onto a guardrail.  Haggar went for a lariat, but Zangief side stepped and sent Mike right into the guardrail.  He then threw Haggar back into the ring and re-entered himself.
    As Zangief entered, Clark slapped him on the back, making the tag. Clark leveled Zangief with a superkick, sending him from the ring, where he landed awkwardly on the outside.  Clark then hit Haggar with a superkick variation...below the belt.  He then signalled for the Sky-Driver and to the
shock of all of the people of the crowd, he hit it.
    1...
    2...
    3!!!

    The crowd went absolutely silent.

    Clark grabbed the World Title belt and left the ring, seeing Zangief was getting up.  He didn't even lift the title over his head over he left nor did he wait for the official word.  Zangief got up and chased Clark back into the dressing room.
    Haggar slowly rose to his feet, looking towards the dressing room as the ring announcer announced "Ladies and Gentlemen, the winner and NEW SMWA World Heavyweight Champion, RICK CLARK!!!"  Haggar slumped against the ropes, a look of disbelief on his face.  Jessica Haggar came in to the ring to console her father, who simply was not supposed to lose tonight...not to Rick Clark.

    Rick Clark was the underdog.  He was the footnote of this match.  It was supposed to be Haggar vs Zangief...and that's how Clark wanted it.
    Rick Clark employed perfect strategy, letting two men who are bigger and stronger than him beat the hell out of each other and going in for the kill at precisely the right moment.

    The World got Zangief vs Haggar...and Rick Clark came out the winner.

    As the show ended, the crowd was still stunned.
